Where is your agent thinnest?

The agent is the smallest part. Whether it works a hundredth time is decided by the six layers around it. Answer eight questions about the workflow you’d hand to an agent and you’ll get the thinnest layer, the move for this week, and nothing to sign up for.

Pick one workflow before you start. Answer for that one, not for the team in general. The layers are explained in the essay.

  1. 01 · contract

For the workflow you’d hand to an agent, is there a written line saying what ‘done’ must produce?

  2. 02 · harness

Does the agent get a defined set of things to read first, and a defined set of things it may touch?

  3. 03 · rubrics

Could someone other than you judge its output as good or not, from something written down?

  4. 04 · memory

When you correct it, does that correction live somewhere other than the chat?

  5. 05 · boundaries

Is there a short list of things that must stay true even when the agent has a better idea?

  6. 06 · state

If the session died right now, could the work resume from where it stands instead of restarting?

  7. 07 · team

Does someone in product own the contract, the rubric and the boundaries, or does it all sit with whoever is most technical?

  8. 08 · team

Has one real workflow run end to end for a week, with a human approving each result?
